Here at the DPPC we are celebrating Earth Day all week long. Not sure where to start?
Check out these 5 simple acts you can do to kick off Earth Day in Providence.
Bike or walk to work.
Spring is finally here, so no more excuses. Get some exercise, save money on gas, and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. Live too far away? Consider carpooling this week instead.
Use reusable bags.
Put some reusable bags in your purse or the trunk of your car for easy access when you’re out running errands. Plastic bags are the leading debris type in Rhode Island waters. Check out what communities like Barrington are doing to try and combat this problem and keep Narragansett Bay cleaner.
Get yourself a reusable water bottle.
Last year the average American used 167 disposable plastic water bottles, but only recycled 38. Picking up a sturdy reusable bottle saves you money on buying disposable bottles, and creates less waste for our landfill.
Shop & dine locally.
You already know about the economic benefits to your community from shopping local, but have you considered the environmental benefits too? Local shops with locally made items use fewer fossil fuels compared to transporting products around the world, and food grown locally helps keep your local farms productive. Have lunch this week at a local restaurant using local food.
Get outside – visit a downtown park!
Celebrate the earth by simply getting in touch with it. Go for a walk, bike, or just sit outside with a good book. Whatever it is you like to do, enjoy it outside.
