The Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy (DPPC) is a public-private partnership formed to preserve and revitalize Providence’s historic downtown core by transforming it into a lively, cohesive and prosperous economic and cultural center through the development and management of exceptional public spaces.
CREATE A PEDESTRIAN-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT
Flower and tree plantings, park benches, lighting, art installations and public performances will create a safe, pedestrian-friendly environment for all to enjoy. This transformed central green will be an inviting space for residents, workers and tourists.
IMPROVE THE RIPTA RIDERSHIP EXPERIENCE
Transportation plays a key role in Kennedy Plaza’s history and RIPTA is an important partner. This project will encourage bus ridership by creating a safe, accessible system, while reducing the number of buses and transfers in the plaza.
BOLSTER ECONOMIC WELL-BEING
The center of our downtown and the access point to City Hall, Greater Kennedy Plaza, is one of the first areas a visitor sees in our capital city. By creating a beautiful, usable public space, we will attract new businesses and improve the environment Kennedy Plaza as a gateway.
PROMOTE ARTS AND CULTURE
Public programming in Greater Kennedy Plaza transforms the public spaces with concerts, festivals and children’s events. As the impact of DPPC’s work expands so will the programming, drawing our diverse communities together downtown to celebrate and engage with each other and our city.
In cities across the globe central plazas draw the interest and activities of tourists and residents alike. Providence’s active, safe, inviting public spaces will draw visitors downtown to dine, shop and enjoy our city —and encourage them to visit again.
